Used Brick: Don't Be So Thick

Brick is a wonderful choice for certain home improvement projects. Brick may be used both indoor and outdoor, is extremely eye-catching and can really help a room or a certain aspect of a room standout. Furthermore bricks can be used in a home improvement project to add atmosphere to both outdoor and indoor yards.

Bricks have become extremely popular with homeowners because of the wide variety of different type of brick available. Everything from antiquated and timeworn looking bricks to sharp cut bricks are used much more frequently than they once were. While new brick can be expensive even for small improvement projects, many homeowners are discovering that used brick is, in most cases, just as good as new brick. Homeowners and the contractors they are working with can select used bricks for their project that vary in color, shape, and size. Bricks of these types are often found in buildings built near the turn of the 20th century. Simply driving by one of these buildings will make it easy for any individual to understand why used brick has become so popular with people looking to improve their homes.

While some homeowners might have trepidations regarding the purchase of used bricks they should remember that despite being old and sometimes very old, salvaged brick is just as strong and sturdy as new brick. Any homeowner concerned with the longevity and durability of used brick needs to look no further than some of the ancient structures built up to 1000 years ago. The brick in those buildings are still standing which speaks volumes about the value of used bricks. Homeowners have no reason to let the word "used" keep them from purchasing used brick for their project. Homeowners who opt to work with a contractor for the duration of their home improvement project can always ask them about the quality of used brick they may be interested in.

Perhaps best of all when it comes to utilizing used brick in a project is price. In the vast majority of scenarios homeowners will find that the used bricks they are interested in cost less than new brick does. In this way, utilizing used brick helps cut costs and helps the homeowner and their contractor complete a project under budget.

Preventative Home Improvement Projects

When an individual begins considering some type of home improvement project they rarely think of projects whose aim it is to test, find, and eliminate problems. In many ways these types of projects are more important than those that add new furniture, flooring, or rain gutters to a home. This is because, by and large, they prevent larger and more expensive problems down the line.

While many home improvement projects can be undertaken by a homeowner, those that aim to find and correct problems within a home should be treated with the utmost of care and have a professional contractor assigned to them. While a homeowner may feel confident in their own abilities to find problems within their homes, only an expert trained in their field will carry the tools and experience necessary to find problems that can hide in out-of-the-way places such as the foundation, within walls, within the electrical wiring, and even the air.

One such project that will require a professional each and every time is radon detecting. Being an odorless, colorless, tasteless, and radioactive gas, it is extremely toxic to human beings. Many homeowners will go years and even decades without ever having their home tested for radon and some homeowners will pay a heavy price for their neglect. Others however will put off purchasing new furniture or repainting their home in favor of having radon inspection done which will not only help make their house more attractive to buyers should they ever decide to sell it but it will also help keep them and their families safe for years to come.

Due to its toxicity, radon should always be tested for an disposed of by a professional. Additionally professionals will have a number of different tools at their disposal which can help them detect and get rid of radon. Many professionals will utilize passive testing kits that detect the gas while others will utilize specialized equipment that actively analyzes gas levels within just a couple of days. Regardless of what type of testing a professional contractor uses to find radon in the home, it's important to have hired one for testing. Even a savvy homeowner who utilizes a radon detection kit will not usually be capable of ridding the home of radon should it be detected.

While home improvement projects add resale value to homes and increase their aesthetic properties, radon detection and other preventative projects give homeowners and buyers peace of mind and can make a home safe to live in for years at a time.

Bamboo: Going Green With Your Home Improvement Projects

Home improvement projects have become very popular as of late although many homeowners now get caught up in going green which can sometimes stall their projects due to the many choices they will face. Homeowners these days are environmentally conscious and usually go to great lengths to ensure that the project doesn't contribute to their carbon footprints or pollution in general. Homeowners looking to go green actually have a number of options at their disposal regardless of the type of home improvement project they intend to move forward with.

Some homeowners may wish to upgrade flooring, fences, decks, and even countertops or furniture but what many of these people do not know is that they can undertake these projects utilizing environmentally friendly materials. The best and perhaps most underutilized green material for home improvement projects is bamboo. Bamboo can be used in a wide variety of different home improvement projects and is extremely sturdy. Better yet and environmentally speaking, bamboo grows back rather easily and quickly when compared to trees that are cut down and used in home improvement projects.

When it comes to flooring bamboo is rumored to be stronger than red Oak and it boasts a stunning appearance in any house in which it is installed. As a result of its durability and its aesthetic properties, bamboo is rapidly becoming the first choice for homeowners who want to add new flooring in their home.

Homeowners who want to add or upgrade fences and decks can also select bamboo as their material of choice. It's far more attractive than chain-link fencing and is just as durable as cedar fencing. Best of all bamboo fencing can be attached to an existing fence or have a traditional wood frame built around it to make it look extra special.

Homeowners who want something special in their kitchens can utilize bamboo for countertops and even their cupboards and cabinets. Doing so will make a kitchen look inspired and radiant. Additionally, as bamboo is denser than most other hardwoods it is perfect for kitchens because spills and messes are far easier to clean on bamboo then there are other woods.

Believe it or not homeowners can actually utilize bamboo to have furniture custom-built for their home. This type of home improvement project can be especially exciting because furniture is everywhere within a home and is seen by everybody. When homeowners think of bamboo furniture they will sometimes think of rustic bamboo pole furniture that was popular throughout the 1970's. Modern bamboo furniture however is quite different and the wood can be used to create elegant dining sets, coffee tables, bed frames, and just about any other type of furniture that a homeowner can imagine.

While bamboo may not be a wood that suits the project needs of some homeowners, it is a wood that should be considered by any homeowner who wants to be as green as possible and produce end results that are simply stunning.

Basic Home Wiring

It goes without saying that most improvement jobs around your home that you can do it yourself (DIY), However that shouldn’t apply to electricity. Unless you know the basic home wiring techniques, hire a professional to do the job. Your family’s very lives hang in the balance especially yours if you’re doing the job yourself.

The very first thing you need to do when you do any type of repair even if you’re only changing a faulty plug is to TURN OFF THE ELECTRICITY at the control panel. You’ll need to know the correct area where you’ll be working and know the rules and regulations of your local codes for residential wiring. They may be a pain in the neck, but they are there for a reason, and that is to keep you and your family safe.

Know the components of basic electrical wiring. Besides safety considerations and regulations you’ll need to know the makeup of your home wiring. There are three basics that you should know before you begin.

Know the service entry, in other words know the point in your home where your electrical service goes from the main grid into your home. The entry lines need to be at least ten feet above the ground and free of obstructions like tree limbs. You shouldn’t be able to access the service entry from any window in your home, and you want it to be away from all water.

Your panel board is where you have control of your entire home. The panel board is where you will shut off the electricity of a certain area and where you will install new breakers if you’re having a major remodel.

The branch circuits mean the isolated areas of your home and where the electricity goes. That way you can cut off the power in your kitchen while leaving the remaining house connected. It is critical that you know the proper areas.

If you’re a novice electrician, we can’t stress it enough, that you hire a professional electrician to do the work. They know what works and what doesn’t. They may be able to save you money in the long run. If they have to get permits to do the job, don’t discourage them and you will be able to rest assured that the electricity wiring in your home is up to standard.

Don’t ever take short cuts when you and your family’s safety is at stake.

Hard Water Spot Removal

If you’ve ever tried to get rid of hard water spots, you know how difficult the job is. In the southwest the water is naturally hard due to minerals like calcium, magnesium, or compounds like sulfates and bicarbonates. Makes you want to order bottled water doesn’t it. Here are a few simple ideas to rid your windows of the spots caused by hard water, but the easiest ways to get rid of those spots is to wash them off as soon as you notice them. That isn’t always the easiest thing to do.

We’ll list several items you can mix with water and many are 50% to 50% like water and white vinegar, if the spots have been there for a while, try pure white vinegar, and omit the water. You might want to wear gloves because some of the items might be harsh on your skin.

Use this method by soaking a towel in the mixture and wiping the area down. Keep the towel very wet and soak it on the window if at all possible. Then rinse and hopefully your hard water spots are gone. Use the towel like an eraser on a blackboard, and apply pressure where needed. You can also spray some of the mixtures directly on your window or shower doors.

Other items to mix with water besides vinegar are lemon juice because of its acidic content, and baking soda is another good cleaning agent. Mix the soda into a paste and apply to the window, let it sit for a few seconds, then wipe and rinse clean.

Rubbing alcohol, toothpaste, yes I said toothpaste, powdered dishwashing detergent, and ammonia are all suggestions. Be careful with ammonia, never mix it with other chemicals like bleach because that is dangerous and can cause lung damage.

Some say cola is good for cleaning hard spots off your windows, but that may attract ants. Any type of acid is also dangerous and can cause irreparable damage to your clothing or furnishings. Steel wool may also help and use it to polish the glass and it shouldn’t scratch it.

If all else fails, try using commercial window cleaners. The only other option you may have is to cover those windows with curtains or blinds so you can’t see the hard spots. The final solution may be to replace the glass in the window. If you do that, be sure that water does not hit the window or you’ll have to start all over again.

Summer Lawn Care

Caring for lawns can be an arduous task even in very temperate climates that receive just the right amount of sunlight and water. In climates that are extremely cold or hot the task can be even greater and more demanding. Whether or not a lawn exists within a climate that's conducive to its growth and longevity, when summer rolls around a homeowner must care for their lawn differently than they do during other seasons of the year.

Summertime for lawn owners means heavy and consistent maintenance. Some homeowners will avoid this altogether by hiring a professional gardener and letting them worry about the hard work involved with caring for a lawn during that time of year. Homeowners who go it alone however will need to change their mindset a bit. Whereas a homeowner in the spring may focus on getting their lawn healthy and helping it recuperate after a long hard winter,  summer lawn care is a different beast altogether.

While in the springtime a homeowner can water their lawns practically anytime it suits them, the summertime will require homeowners to water their lawns in the wee hours of the morning. In the precious few fleeting hours before the sun rises, there is little heat and therefore little evaporation. This means that lawns can soak up all the water they need and even store a bit for the hot days that is to follow. Fertilizing lawns in the summer is also somewhat different than it is during other parts of the year. A homeowner will need to fertilize their lawn more than they do any other time of the year and will need to do so more frequently.

Depending on the type of lawn a homeowner has watering, feeding, and even fertilizing schedules will need to be reworked so as to promote growth and longevity in a lawn during the summer. This means homeowners with cool season grasses such as fescue, bluegrass, and wry will need to care for their lawns in either the early morning hours were shortly after the sun sets. These types of grasses grow and function best when temperatures are in the 60s. On the other hand however homeowners with warm season grasses like Zoysia, St. Augustine, centipede, and Bermuda function well in temperatures ranging from the 70s to low 80s. As a result these lawns can be cared for at different times during the summer months and are likely to remain healthier as a result of their more durable nature.

Also important for homeowners to remember is that once temperatures begin soaring into the mid 80's and above their lawns will begin to struggle a little bit and growth will slow to a crawl and may even stall together. Some lawns may even begin to show signs of wear and tear if they are not cared for properly and consistently during summer months. Homeowners who have lawns and function better in cooler temperatures may even wish to make their lawns off-limits to foot traffic and pets until the summer passes.

While caring for a lawn during the summer isn't by any means impossible it is a task that might make many homeowners feel overwhelmed and even defeated. Lawn owners who feel like this however should immediately call in a professional to care for their lawn. Most lawns are expensive to both put in ground and care for and it is a true shame and waste of money to let a lawn be destroyed or ravaged by the summer sun and the soaring temperatures it creates.

Are You Using The Right Materials For Your Project

No home improvement project is without its issues or problems and there are virtually no end to the amount of considerations a homeowner will face during the planning phase of the project and even during the implementation of one. Perhaps one of the most important aspects of the project and one that goes overlooked far too often is choosing the right materials for a project.

It doesn't matter whether the project is big or small, expensive or inexpensive, and either simple or complicated. While there is usually some small consideration given for building/construction materials in any home improvement project, the majority of homeowners and even some subpar contractors simply rush through the selection of materials available. There are many aspects of a home improvement project however that can go awry simply as a result of selecting less than optimal materials for projects.

The first aspect being cost. Believe it or not a home improvement project's costs can double, triple and in some cases quadruple when the wrong materials are selected for a job. The fact of the matter is that most building materials are available in a wide variety of different qualities all of which carry their own price tags. Homeowners who select materials while at the same time look for ways to trim their budget often end up with materials that aren't quite right for the job, especially those materials that are meant to function in the long term. While the initial project may come off without a hitch even when the wrong materials are used, it's only a matter of time before repairs or replacements must be made, increasing costs dramatically across the board for a homeowner.

Prior to selecting any materials for their home improvement projects, homeowners should try to think of the lifecycle cost of the materials they are looking at. While they last a long time or will they last only for a short while? Will they stand up to heavy foot traffic, spills, stains, etc. These are also questions homeowners should ask themselves when trying to select materials for their project. It also behooves homeowners to consider energy-efficient materials as this will save them money in the long run and give them a chance to go green.

The second item homeowners must consider when selecting materials for their home improvement project is the aesthetic properties of everything they're looking at. Any home improvement project that involves something that guests and potential buyers will see at some point should see aesthetics given heavy consideration before any purchases are made. Projects that involve windows, shingles, siding, flooring and the like all need to be optimized so that when a project is completed the new additions to a home not only complement any existing decor but function as a standout as well.

The third and perhaps most important item that needs consideration prior to undertaking any home improvement project is a homeowner's budget. A budget will determine exactly how far a homeowner can go with the project they have in mind and will also determine what types of materials they can purchase. Homeowners should keep in mind however that when it comes to home improvement projects they should be prepared to push their budget to the limits. The greater the result the more resale value a home will receive and the happier homeowners will be living in their home. Of course working with a professional building contractor of some sort will ensure that homeowners not only reign in their project on a budget but also get the materials that are right for their project. While some owners may elect to go it alone with their home improvement project when in doubt contact the professionals.

Ideas for Your Winter Patio

Whenever you think of your patio, you probably think of it only in the spring and summer months when the weather is warm, and the snow is nearly gone. Have you ever considered preparing your patio for the winter, and that doesn’t mean you’ll have to purchase everything again. By the time winter is in full swing, everyone in your family will be wishing to get outside and nothing will suit that purpose better than a winter patio.

So what would you need in advance so your patio will work in all seasons instead of one or two? To cut down on wind chill, plan to purchase floor to ceiling shades or blinds. Ones that roll up and down would be sufficient and when not in use can roll up and out of the way. They should attach to the ceiling and floor of your patio to remain in place when in use.

Next, you’ll want some way to heat the area. There are many types of outdoor electric heaters that work well in your winter patio. Outdoor wood burning fireplaces will bring the heat to the area inside the blinds. Just be cautious anytime you have a heat source that they aren’t crowded or touching anything that could cause a fire.

Lighting will be important, and you’ll want more light than the back porch single bulb light. Invest in smaller fixtures where you can aim the light to the right area. Lights on tracks could serve this purpose well.

Harsh metal or plastic patio furniture would be rather uncomfortable in the cold. Cushioned seats with waterproof covers would be preferred and used all year long. Anything that absorbs moisture should be stored away.

Outdoor kitchens work well in the winter especially if they are under a sturdy patio cover. A grill with counter space for preparing food would be sufficient. Many prefer to add other appliances like a small refrigerator, a gas burner, and storage areas.

Whatever you do, you don’t have to do it all at once. You could buy little by little while keeping the entire plan either in your head or drawn out. Buy the grill, then save for the table and chairs, but try to have them all in place before winter arrives.

Check online to find professionals who can help you design your own winter patio. But now you will call it the patio and omit the winter part because you’ll use it all year long.

Summer Window Cleaning: Planning Ahead

There are a lot of things that can there are a lot of things that can "dirty up windows" year-round. In the winter things like precipitation and debris from winds and other inclement weather make keeping windows clean somewhat difficult. In the summer however the extreme heat and humidity can increase the mold and mildew count in air dramatically. The thicker these things become the more likely it is that they will begin growing on a homes windows.

Of course calling in a professional during the summer is the first choice of many homeowners however due to budgetary reasons some homeowners may have no choice but to keep their windows clean themselves. Cleaning a home's windows in the summertime presents a great number of challenges to the layperson, challenges which must be met if a homeowner wants their windows looking clean and healthy.

During the summertime homeowners need to keep a close eye on their windows and look for spots on windows that are turning green or blotchy. This can be a sign of mold and mildew growth. While not all windows on a home will grow mildew and mold during the summertime all are susceptible to it because of the high heat and humidity so homeowners must remain vigilant throughout the entire season.

Mold and mildew aside there are other challenges homeowners must face when cleaning windows in the summertime. Selecting chemicals, soaps, tools, and keeping a close eye on hydration, personal safety, and even streaks are all very important. The summertime and its extreme heat can present homeowners with a unique challenge that they won't face during other seasons. The high heat and humidity not only promote mold and mildew growth but make drying windows a chore. While in the winter, and even spring months of the year windows can be washed and dried rather easily summer window cleaning will see soaps and chemicals often dry out rather quickly during the summer months of the year which means an individual must re-wash them immediately to avoid streaks, dried soap marks, and even hard water stains.

In order to properly clean their own windows during the summer homeowners should spend some time formulating a plan of attack. Such plans might include cleaning the windows of a home before sunrise or at least in the early morning hours before the sun has a chance to begin baking a home, and/or working at dusk or just after sunset. Other plans might include involving other family members to help so that windows can be dried quickly and properly. Family members can even split up and tackle different parts of a home in order to expedite the project. Deciding on which type of chemicals and tools to use in advance will also make cleaning windows in the summer less arduous and can even make the job run smoother and more efficiently.

Nobody wants to spend time working outside of their home during the hottest months of the year but by planning in advance and knowing what to look for prior to undertaking any job homeowners can complete the job much quicker than normal and doing so will ensure better end results as well.

Overlooked Kitchen Remodeling Details

Typically when a homeowner considers remodeling their kitchen they don't often think of some of the nuances of such a project. Generally speaking, homeowners who want to remodel their kitchen will focus on new appliances, new flooring, and perhaps a new dining table and chairs. As the focus on the large in kitchen remodeling tends to overshadow things of a smaller but equally significant nature it behooves homeowners to think outside of the box when planning such a project.

Backsplash tile is one example of thinking outside of the box when it comes to kitchen remodeling or improvement. Backsplash tile became popular a few years back and represents a near perfect balance between design and function. While this type of tile is generally found in bathrooms and it functions well in those rooms, the kitchen can also benefit greatly from this type of tile. Having backsplash tile installed during a kitchen remodel is a great way to keep foods and water off of kitchen walls but it also can function as a transitional piece helping to bridge together the color palette and designs that flow from kitchen into an adjacent room.

Any homeowner who considers installing backsplash tile in their kitchen or have myriad of different color options and designs to choose from. Backsplash tile is available in a number of different colors and styles which makes it easy for even the most fastidious of homeowners to find a color and style that will work well for their kitchen. This type of tile is also available in a great number of different shapes as well as no two kitchens are exactly the same. Homeowners should have no problem finding backsplash tile that both accentuates the paint and decor in a newly remodeled kitchen and a nearby rooms as well. When remodeling a kitchen color coordination with the rest of the house is extremely important and backsplash tiles are a great way to ensure that a kitchen remains warm and fitting with the rest of its home.

As far as materials are concerned, there are granite, solid surface, stone, and even other less expensive options to choose from and the choice made will depend largely on existing decor and the personal tastes and desires of a homeowner. With so many choices available homeowners will benefit from the assistance of a professional contractor. Not only can a professional contractor or interior designer assist a homeowner with a selection of their new backsplash tiling but can also handle installation as well. A home's kitchen is the one room in a home that needs to be functional, warm, and efficient as it is used frequently and by everybody. Attempting to tackle a kitchen remodel, even a small one, by oneself is sheer folly. Hiring a contractor is the way to go.

Any homeowner who adds backsplash tile to their kitchen as part of their remodeling project will always be pleased with the end result and will usually consider adding the same to the bathrooms in their home as well. Backsplash tile is not only functional but it is extremely eye-catching and can add a touch of class to any room in which it is installed in.

Dress Up Your Pool

When the deck around your pool looks like the sidewalk, it doesn’t need to stay that way. There are ways to dress up the entire area, and when money is the object, you can find ways to make it more attractive.

You can install interlocking tiles on top of the cement, but many are also laid on pea gravel or even on hard-packed surface. Before you install the tile on bare earth make sure the ground is level without bumps or holes. Then place a weed-controlled mat under the tile. There are many colors of tile you could use to match your home decor, or contrast it with a polymer base wood tile. For tile around the pool, use a jigsaw to cut the square tiles to conform.

Tile is not the cheapest, and another quicker way would be to use pool deck paint that’s manufactured especially for pool decks. Most pool deck paint is acrylic and cleans up with water. The paint protects your deck from the sun and other harsh temperatures.

The paints come in a variety of colors, and they normally come with non-slip or skid properties as well. If the manufacturer doesn’t supply it, you can also add sand or pumice to the paint before you apply it.

Whichever types of upgrades you use to dress up your pool deck, the ones listed are easy to achieve for most DIY’ers. Not only do they dress up your back yard, but they help to keep your yard looking good for years to come.

Another thing you could do would be to invest in pots or leave an area where you could add plants.
You’ve already spent a lot on the pool itself, so now finish the job so your yard will be complete. There are many professionals out there that can get the job done in a lot less time than you can. They may be able to give you more advice how you can make the area more usable and attractive and still be within your budget.

Go online and search for a local professional. Find one who will come to your home and give you a free estimate. They know the ins and outs of landscaping. They can tell you what works best in your area, and what won’t work. For instance you don’t want plants planted in dirt close to the pool area. They will also tell you the plants indigenous to your area. You can always use either or all of the ideas listed above, and you alone can needs to decide.

For Smaller Projects Hire A Handyman

For large home improvement jobs specialized contractors are a necessity. When dealing with smaller projects however, many homeowners will often attempt to tackle the job on their own. Projects such as new flooring, interior paint, new wallpaper, and even new screens and windows are often thought of as home improvement jobs that don't require a lot of skill or experience. While it is true that there are far more complex home-improvement jobs, smaller jobs can also benefit greatly from the hiring of a professional contractor. Even the aforementioned projects often require precise measurements, patience, proper tools, and a knowledge of construction.

While some homeowners may elect to tackle smaller home improvement jobs on their own, even the savviest of homeowners will have a difficult time with not only the project but achieving the desired results as well. Other homeowners however recognize that the results of even small home improvement projects benefit greatly from the hands and the attention of a professional.

It's important to keep in mind however that for smaller jobs a specific type of contractor isn't always necessary. In fact hiring a contractor who specializes in something specific can cost more than a project is worth. In such scenarios homeowners can and should opt for a handyman as opposed to a specialized contractor. Though there is a certain stigma attached to the word handymen the truth is that the majority of them are licensed professionals who once worked as either a specialist in one field or oversaw construction on a large-scale. In this respect handymen are sometimes thought of as being even more experienced than a specialist.

While it is common for homeowners to shy away from handymen because of the unfair stigma attached to the word, any homeowner with a small home improvement project or any number of small projects in the works, should find, interview, and then hire a reliable handyman for the job. Hiring a handyman for small projects not only saves homeowners a ton of money but a lot of headache as well by eliminating the need to tackle such jobs themselves. It also ensures that the end result of small home improvement projects will be something that homeowners can be proud of.

Any homeowner that has some small home improvement projects in the works or any that need some immediate attention should contact a handyman for no less than a consultation. Even if they don't hire a handyman, a homeowner can gain valuable insight into how to proceed with their projects and how to ensure that their project is completed in a timely fashion and on/under budget as well

Unexpected Home Improvement Projects

While the majority of home improvement projects are projects that homeowners are excited about there are those that homeowners dread or have forced upon them by way of damage to their home. Examples of involuntary home improvement projects include homes damaged by water and those damaged by fire. Both unfortunate incidences must be dealt with quickly and efficiently by a homeowner if they are to save their belongings, their home, and restore it to livable condition.
Individuals with homes damaged by water, more specifically floods, have an arduous and daunting task in front of them. Not only must they deal with the reality of damage and even potential loss of their home in some circumstances but they must also find and hire a reputable contractor that can help them return their home to its former condition and even restore damaged furniture and other items. Flooding in a home can occur as a result of an issue with the roof, troubled plumbing, and of course natural disasters. Should anyone ever find themselves in the midst of an emergency flood cleanup there are a few guidelines that, if followed, can help get their home up and running once again.

Anytime a home has been damaged by water safety assessing damage should be top priority for a homeowner. Before any phone calls are made or anything is thrown out or replaced a thorough evaluation of the damage should be taken by homeowners. Once a homeowner has a good idea of what has been damaged and to what extent it's, they can begin searching for a reliable specialist that can help them with their home. In some cases it might even be a good idea for homeowners to call in a professional assessor to evaluate the extent of damage done to their home. While homeowners can utilize their eyes and their hands to assess damage, a professional has tools and experience at their disposal which will help them evaluate the damage done to the internal structures and even electrical structures within a home.

Once the damage incurred within a home is been assessed homeowners should take great care to document everything. Documenting items that have been damaged and even those left undamaged can be of great benefit to homeowners when they go to file a claim with their insurance company. Not only should damage be documented on paper with written word but pictures and even video should be taken of the damage in order to provide professionals and even insurance personnel with physical evidence of the damage incurred. The more documentation a homeowner has for their flood/water damage incident the better off they will be moving forward and getting everything repaired.

With the essentials out-of-the-way homeowners should prepare themselves for some hard work. Homes will need to be dried and cleaned up as quickly as possible in order to avert further damage. Additionally houses with water damage that aren't cleaned and dried immediately run the risk of allowing mold and fungus to take root and grow rapidly. In most cases homeowners are best served by calling in a professional to help them clean and dry their home. Professionals can bring in commercial grade dehumidifiers and large fans that expedite the drying process. Additionally professionals will have other types of equipment and knowledge that homeowners don't which will help make drying out a home all the more quick.

Once a home has been dried out, with or without a professional, homeowners will need to begin the substantial undertaking of repairs. The nature and scale of repairs will depend greatly on the amount of and the type of damage incurred by water in their home. Some homes will need only minor cleaning while others will need new construction. Additionally homeowners with water damage may need to seek out temporary alternative housing while professionals repair their home and in worst case scenarios, rebuild it.

Any homeowner who has had water damage in their homes should at least speak with a contractor before moving forward with anything. This can provide them with invaluable insight into how to proceed and give them a number of different options on how to do so. Such professionals might also refer homeowners to other professionals who can help restore their homes and living order as well.

Shutter Colors And Selection

So you've decided that your latest home improvement project will include new shutters for all of your windows. Adding new shutters to your home not only increases resale value and will make your home seem more warm but you also get the added benefit of security and privacy. Once the decision has been made to include shutters in a home improvement project however there are a number of other decisions that you have to make prior to beginning any such project.

While many exterior shutters are available in a wide variety of both conservative and loud colors, interior shutters designed for privacy, security, and climate control are usually only available in white, black, and a variety of different shades of stain. Additionally the type of wood new shutters are constructed from will determine their color as well. You'll want to carefully choose shutters and colors that match existing decor within your home so as to avoid anything that sharply contrasts with furniture, paint, and other types of decor. If your home improvement project happens to include a new coat of interior paint the selection of shutters available to you will expand dramatically whereas homeowners who are only installing shutters as part of the project will have fewer options to choose from.

Shutters with darker stains and those made from wood with darker coloring are great for creating relaxing moods and unparalleled ambiance in rooms such as den's, studies, or game rooms. In contrast lighter colored shutters are often used by homeowners in areas or rooms that see a lot of sunlight or function as a living or family room. With so many different choices available it might be wise for you speak with an interior designer about which type will work best for you and your home. Many manufacturers can also assist by offering their assessment of your home as well.

Carefully selecting the right shutters for your home will not only ensure that they complement your home but that you'll enjoy them for many years and even decades to come. Selecting shutters haphazardly or hastily often results in less than favorable and results and the need to replace shutters not long after they've been installed. Doing it right the first time should be your modus operandi when it comes to home improvement and especially shutters.

Solar Power For Your Home: Still On The Fence?

Homeowners who want to reduce the cost of energy consumption within their home have just two options. The first option being the heavy monitoring of energy usage within their homes. This often means double and triple checking to ensure that lights are turned off when people leave the room, TVs are on only when they are being used, and even ensuring things are unplugged when they are going to remain unused for long periods of time. The second option homeowners have when they want to reduce energy costs and consumption is to have a solar power system installed within their home. The first option while noble, isn't always practical.

Solar power systems dramatically reduce even a large family's electrical bill and is great for the environment. Some homeowners however ask themselves "is solar power really worth it?" While it certainly costs a pretty penny to convert sunlight to energy and the initial cost of having a solar powered system installed can be expensive, the ends completely justifies the means. While it's true that material handling, manufacturing, production efficiency and installation drive up the initial price of solar power systems, homeowners will see a dramatic reduction in costs almost immediately and will feel better knowing that they are helping to reduce waste by utilizing a green technology.

Homeowners who have been on the fence for some time about whether or not to have a solar power system installed on their home can rest easy knowing that the technology has advanced rapidly over the past few years which in turn has driven costs down considerably. These falling costs have made it possible for even homeowners operating on small budgets to have a modest system installed. While these modest systems don't completely take a homeowner off the grid they still reduce monthly electricity costs significantly. Upfront expenses for installation used to cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000. These days however a modest system can be installed for around $5000 which gives families of any size the chance to go green and to reduce costs.

Homeowners who decide to make the leap and have a solar power system installed in their home will have a number of different types of systems to choose from. Some of these will simply reduce costs but keep them connected to their electric company. The more expensive and upscale systems will allow homeowners to go completely off the grid and function independently away from any electric company. The best solar power systems will even allow homeowners to harness energy during the day for usage at night and for times when there is no traditional power available.

There has never been a better time for homeowners to have a solar power system installed in their home. There was once a time when the cons outweighed the pros but that time has long since past. Many of the companies that set up solar power systems for homes are now offering special deals that can help homeowners take advantage of even lower than normal prices. The time to act is now a if you own a home.

Smart Glass

You’re kidding right? Nope! Not kidding! Smart Glass, believe it or not, is a new technology, and anytime they claim that the glass is smart, you know something great is on the way. There are many new words connected to smart glass, so let us explain a few.

First off, Photochromic technology works similar to your sunglasses and they need no electricity or anything manual to work. When the sun hits them they tint. Period. They work well when you want your windows to tint automatically when the sun hits them. During winter when you’d like the sun to enter your home, the tint blocks it out.

Now you will be able to control how much sun comes through your windows, and a simple tint doesn’t do the job. The Suspended Particle Devise works this way: They separate the two panes of glass by a space of air and a conductive glaze covers the glass. The elements, suspended in a liquid film, and the particles block out the light and the room remains dark. Flip the switch, the electricity causes the elements to line up and allows light to pass through.

You’ll find the Liquid Crystals in digital clocks and DVD displays. Turn the electricity on and the light comes through your windows. Turned off and the room becomes dark again. At least you control the amount of light coming into your home.

Thirdly the Electrochromic Glass work opposite the previous mentioned Smart Glass. When you supply the current, the windows become dark. Turned back on the windows allow the light to shine through. This type may take a few minutes to adjust and normally the electrochromic glass works from the outside in to the middle. It doesn’t require a lot of electricity once the initial tint is achieved; you need no more power to maintain it. You now have total control of your windows.

The Smart Glass windows come from the factory and need a trained technician to achieve success. The professional will have the necessary knowledge to install them because it involves a lot of specialized labor.

When something new comes on the market, the prices normally soar. The manufacturer suggests that homeowners have these smart glass windows installed one window at a time. Choose the window where the room is the hottest in the summertime. Once you have total control of your windows, you’ll brag about your Smart Glass, and soon you’ll see smart glass everywhere.

Dual Pane Windows

Most new homes in the state of California have dual pane windows. If your home is twenty years or older, you may want to consider having dual pane windows installed in your entire home. Not only will the new windows add to your home’s value, but you’ll find that your heating and cooling bills will be lower.

Not only that, but your home will be quieter and you won’t believe the difference. You’ll wonder why you never had the dual pane windows installed before. Those barking neighbor’s dogs can be shut out in an instant, just close your windows. You’ll also silence your neighbor’s lawn mower early Saturday mornings.

So what exactly are dual pane windows? Why are they so popular that they even make laws requiring them to be installed in new homes?

There are many companies today that have been replacing regular windows in homes and have increased their business by adding the dual pane windows as part of their specialty. The windows are custom made at factories and have 2 sheets of glass with a dead-air space between them. That space is what slows the transfer of air temperature between the inside and outside.

It’s unbelievable how well they work. When you’re accustomed to sharing sounds from your neighbor’s, especially if they have a teenager who practices drums in the garage with the door wide open. You figure it is what happens in close-knit neighborhoods, you hear that thump – thump – thump of their music. Or you hear their arguments that you don’t want to share.

When you consider something as simple as changing out your regular windows to dual pane windows, you’ll wonder why you waited so long. The new windows will be the rave of the neighborhood. They add value to your home and your home no longer looks old and with a new paint job, your home can compete with the new ones in town.

Not only will the windows be new, but the frames will be new as well. Bright white frames add a dignity to your home, and they can tint the windows and also add blinds between the sheets of glass. Now who do you hire to install them?

Like we said before, there are many companies that deal almost exclusively with dual pane windows. They will come to your home, measure all of your windows you want replaced, give you a price, have a contract for you to sign, and within a short period of time you’ll appreciate your new dual pane windows.

Formal Dining Rooms

Is your formal dining room a room that you rarely use? Even when you have guests, you often sit in the den or playroom watching the game on TV. Or everyone gathers in the kitchen. If you’re looking to replace that hutch filled with China that you never use, consider replacing the beautiful old dishes with books, games or other items that just sit around.

Or just get rid of the hutch. Place it in the corner of the garage. With the hutch out of the way, consider replacing it with a round table where no one sits at the head of the table, but see each other easily in plain view.

Instead of heavy old-fashioned furniture, replace with lightweight folding chairs, and new sheer fabric on the windows. Have bright placemats and contrasting dishes. If you have silver utensils and silver tea set, consider selling it and using that money to update your dining area. If your family has outgrown the kitchen table, use your new colorful dining room as a daily family dinner place; or where the kids can work on their homework.

Consider heavy-duty paper and plastic utensils when guests arrive to your new dining room, and instead of formal, call it casual. You can dress it up come the holidays, but you’ll still probably use it more when everyone is casual and less elegant. If the light fixture no longer matches the surrounding area, replace it with a ceiling fan and light.

If you like your heavy formal dining room, but you still want it to look more modern, remove some of the heavy picture frames and replace them with fun pictures of your family that will be sure conversation starters. When new grandchildren arrive, hang pictures of their parents when they were the same age. Compare the different hair dos and laugh as you remember the time when you took the pictures.

Listen to the laughter as the grands compare them. Then get out your camera and take more unrehearsed pictures and splash them around even on a corkboard for their next visit.
Having a formal dining room doesn’t mean you have to be stuffy, so make it a fun time for the family to gather; whether it is daily, monthly or yearly. With a little ingenuity your family will look forward to the time spent in your room that is no longer used sparingly.

Interior Shutters Cost & Installation

When you tire of your curtains, drapes or blinds, the first place you may visit to replace them is your local hardware store. Although they are a good place to buy, but if you’re looking for a permanent fixture for your windows, custom interior shutters will be your best bet.

The custom-made interior shutters are heavier, stronger and achieve a great deal of style as they fit your windows to a “T.” Because they make your shutters to your exact specifications no matter the shape of your windows. So what should you look for when you go online and search for a local business that specializes in interior shutters? Don’t compare apples and oranges you pay more for quality and experience.

The company that relies on their past experience and knowledge of the many different types of shutters, be they wood, vinyl, metal or even fabric, will give your windows the uniqueness you desire. Many companies make the shutters right in their own factory. Others buy from reliable sources and you will realize the difference when you see   the shutters installed correctly on your windows.

Cost is always a factor, but when you invest in a permanent fixture for your windows, don’t skimp, but purchase from reliable dealers. Suppose your custom interior shutters cost in the neighborhood of $1700. Drapes or curtains may cost just under $1000, and blinds or simple shades just under $800. You may have skimped in the past and now you feel that you wasted your money because the year old curtains no longer retain their shape and may even be faded.

You won’t have to worry about fading or sagging interior shutters. Not when you have a professional install them. Many have asked, what is the difference between interior shutters and blinds? An interior shutter swings open and has larger slats so you   control the amount of sun entering your home. A blind is operated with a rod that rotates the slats, and a heavy string to pull them open. If you have ever had blinds, you know the string breaks and the blinds can twist over time.

Educate yourself on the different types of interior shutters. Compare the quality and price with a hardware store where the shutters are pre-made, and a custom shutter where they make them to fit your windows. Then contact a reliable business, get references from their customers, check out their work and you won’t be sorry you took the time to know the difference.

Choose the Best Lock & Key Expert for Your Business

To find the lock and key expert you should search for the best one in your area in advance, before you need him. You don’t want to choose the expert that has the largest advertisement in the Yellow Pages to come to your business, to make your keys, and even to unlock your safe. You’ll need someone who has a place of business, can give you references, and is licensed, insured and bonded.

However there will be times when you have to call a complete stranger to get you out of a jam. It will probably be the worst time ever, and you may have left your cell phone at home. As you walk to the nearest pay phone, if there are any left in your area, you can still ask him the necessary questions, and investigate him fully later.

You won’t want a novice either. It takes years of training and experience for a Locksmith to learn the trade and if he claims all of the above, still check him out and ask for references. We live in a world where the thief is as knowledgeable as the professional.

How will the best lock and key expert help you in protecting your business? The commercial locksmith will re-key your locks for your business; program your keys; set up a master key for use on all locks in your establishment and have specialized keys for specific areas; he’ll help you with your intercom, alarms, closed circuit television; commercial security systems; and exit devices. In other words the lock and key expert will have the training and certifications to back up all of his claims.

Once you’ve found the exact fit of your locksmith remember he is in business to earn a living. His knowledge and time is what you will pay for. It may take him minutes to fix your problems, and it could have taken hours or days for you to do the job correctly. Remember he has to travel to your place of business, and he has the necessary tools to do the job. Those don’t come cheap either.

Your locksmith will be available seven days a week and twenty-four hours each day. That is worth a great deal when you find your front door smashed and the windows broken. He’ll help you install a new door, and repair broken locks.

When you find the locksmith that is honest, reliable, and knowledgeable, hold on to him because you will need him again.
Astro Locksmith specializes in Boston Locksmith services, Locksmiths in Boston and 24 hour Locksmith Boston.

Dinette Sets

Remember the days when the family gathered around the dinette set in the kitchen for every single meal? Are those days gone for good? How can we get that same feeling back in our busy structured worlds?

If you have room in your kitchen for a dinette set, invest in one that will fit the area as well as your needs. You’ll never be happy with a table that seats eight when there are only four in your family. If the reverse is true that would be difficult to fit eight people in the space meant for four. When you go shopping, check out a small local furniture store or you you’ll find many online. They usually have the table that will be just what you want. A table made of chrome, composite or wood will do nicely.

In the past the kitchen was where everyone gathered, so bring those days back with a light and airy dinette set that fits nicely in your area. Make sure the area surrounding the table is workable, things like a blackboard or a board for messages, or simply a calendar where everyone can mark their schedules. A tall mirror so everyone can check their images before leaving works wells too.

Another consideration could be a kitchen nook. They are available in built in models or with benches instead of chairs. The options are endless depending on your family’s needs and considerations.
Your object in dealing with dinette sets is to fill the needs of the entire family. For the young person, school homework could be done while the cook fixes dinner. A computer desk would be another item necessary in today’s modern family. It wouldn’t have to be near the dinette set, but could be where the kids feel comfortable being there.

If you’re good at drawing, draw out an area where the table will sit. Measure it because what looks good in the store may not fit exactly where you want it. The table that will sit in the middle of the floor doesn’t need the measurements as much as the table that will sit in a nook or window area.
Before you make your final decisions, check out magazines or catalogs. Sometimes you may not care for the way they decorate their areas in the magazines. However you may get some good ideas and then the decisions will be yours and yours alone. Try to either mix or match the items surrounding the table and make it a pleasant part of your home.

Pocket Doors Save Space

When you think of a pocket door, you probably think pocket doors can only be installed when the house is built. That is the easiest time to install them, but in today’s world with more modern hard nylon material with deluxe ball bearing rollers, the doors are quieter and easier to use. Even for those in wheelchairs or handicapped.

A pocket door takes up little space compared to other doors that require at least ten square feet of your living space to work. In the past the doors were noisy, but not so today, and the runner technology helps the doors stay on track.

The biggest factor when installing the doors in a home already constructed is what’s inside the wall where the pocket door will be installed? Many times, you won’t know until you tear into the wall, and that can be a difficult and expensive thing to do. Electrical wiring, plumbing and ductwork could run through the walls at that point.

Another factor will be; will the pocket door assembly fit inside the wall? And is the wall for the intended pocket door on a weight bearing wall or do the walls have cabinets attached to them. Then the pocket door might not work there.

Many larger homes have French doors on the interior of the house in order to close off one room from another. Pocket doors would work well there with the same concerns as other pocket doors.
Pocket doors do save space when you compare them with the traditional doors and the advantages are many. Those traditional doors hit other objects or obstruct foot traffic. While the pocket door is hidden from sight, and is quiet and out of the way.

If you’re a handyman around your own home, you might want to consider the help of a licensed contractor. They will know the ins and outs of pocket doors and whether or not they will take the job. It isn’t the easiest job because it takes time to remove a wall, see what’s behind it, install the pocket door, and then reattach the wall so no one will ever know that they removed it. It may be unwise to tackle the job yourself.

If you have a closet, bathroom or anywhere else where the door is an obstruction instead of the desired opening, the pocket door may be the ticket to enlarge the entire area.
Whenever you hire a contractor, check his claims, check his references, and don’t ever pay him for the entire job in advance.
