Desert Landscaping

If you live in an area where desert landscaping is a necessity, you may only see large lawns at the golf course. Cities and counties that discourage those lawns and some will even pay you to remove them when the sole purpose is to conserve water.

Water is a valuable asset and a green lawn is not even a necessity. If you live in an area that is experiencing a drought it will be worth your effort to contact a landscape professional. They know the area, and know which plants are indigenous and you will easily be able to maintain them in a natural environment.

There are many ways to conserve and many ways where your plants will thrive in sandy soil. When you add heat and wind to that mix the need increases for you to find the correct balance between nature and your water bill.

Hedges and natural plants like cactus and yucca will be an added benefit because they do not need a great deal of water, and many flowering plants like lilies and poppies fall in that category as well. Often you can plant the flowers in planters where the water is absorbed directly onto the roots with no waste.

Another way to beat the heat and water consumption is to have the landscape professional install timed irrigation drip systems. They only water at precise times, like early morning or evenings and you have no runoff and no evaporation in the heat of the day.

Stone pathways surrounded with those indigenous plants create beautiful yards with perennials like oleander, bougainvillea and even juniper. Install small window planters inside or out that conserve as well and you still have the benefit of beautiful living flowers in your dry waterless space.

A few basic options you need to follow in order to sustain the long summer months will be to water in the early morning or late afternoon after the sun has retreated. Try to check to see if your plants even need water by checking the soil. Some plants only need watering weekly especially in the fall and winter months. Others go dormant in those months and need no water.

If you have a great deal of concrete for walkways or driveways, remember those areas reflect the heat instead of absorbing it. It’s actually hotter in those areas, and may even raise the temperature around your home. A little common sense goes a long way and when you hire a professional landscaper you’ll be dollars ahead.

Custom Window Shutters

Customized window shutters have changed as much as our country has changed throughout the years. Originally they installed the plantation shutters over open windows (without glass) and they opened completely or closed completely as well. They provided security and privacy, but afforded a way for the inhabitants of the home to control the weather.

They installed the original shutters on the outside of their homes. You can still do that of course, but many custom window shutters have made their way into the interior of the home. You’ll see those custom shutters throughout the home and sometimes they even close off one room from another by installing shutters across the doorways.

The shutters are that strong, or rather they should be. When you decide on 100% real wood custom window shutters, you’ll be amazed at their strength. When the company you choose to construct and install the custom shutters, they will tell you what works best in your home.

Without doubt, custom window shutters are way beyond simplicity. They have a beauty all their own and can be installed with other window treatments and still have the uniqueness that only they can give. From heavy draperies to sheer curtains your rooms will emerge from their drab existence to an elegant setting where your pride will shine through. Even when you let them stand alone, they bring the final touches to your room and are very pleasing to any observer.

The custom shutters still provide security and privacy and even if you live where four seasons don’t exist, they control the heat escaping or entering your residence or work place. They mount those wide louvers into a solid wooden frame, and the louvers on the shutters are between two and three inches wide. There is hardly any resemblance to those old-fashioned venetian blinds.

The air can flow freely with the shutters open wide, or when you place the louvers in the open position. They open in any position between open and close and can provide that privacy simply by making adjustments in the louvers.

The variety of styles and window treatment will astonish you. No matter the size or function of your windows, the custom window shutters will fill that window entirely. The strength, beauty and amount of options will convince you that you have made the right decision.

Whether you want one window, a room full or your entire home covered with quality customized window shutters, their superiority over the competitors will ease your mind and you’ll realize that you made the correct decision.

Organizing A Bedroom With New Furniture

Selecting new bedroom furniture can be an exciting project. That said there are two primary reasons for adding new furniture to a bedroom; both of which require careful consideration on the part of a homeowner. The first reason homeowners might add some new furniture to a bedroom is to liven up a bedroom and to give it some much needed atmosphere. The second and sometimes more important reason for adding new furniture to a bedroom is organization and maximizing space.

Although many homeowners may not admit or even talk about it, adding new furniture to a bedroom can really maximize space in even the smallest of bedrooms and can help them with storage issues as well. In many cases homeowners will have options available to them which will allow them to purchase good-looking furniture that doubles as storage pieces. Of course with so many different types of bedroom furniture available these days a homeowner can quickly become befuddled and find themselves unsure of which items to purchase. Homeowners serious about new bedroom furniture and maximizing space and storage should consult with an interior decorator and/or professional organizer in order to find out what their best options are.

As bedrooms can quickly become overcrowded with furniture, clothing, television sets, and dressers, it's not hard to imagine what why some homeowners go the route of new bedroom furniture when they're looking to increase living space in their bedrooms and make them more comfortable. While the majority of homeowners will have a large dresser in their bedroom in order to accommodate their clothing, many fail to recognize that a dresser can be replaced by a modern bedroom entertainment center. While it may seem odd at first, many modern bedroom entertainment centers are built to double as a dresser allowing homeowners to combine a dresser and an entertainment center in one body which ultimately frees up space in their bedroom. The same can be said of bed frames as well.

Modern bed frames are often built to include things like drawers, both large and small, that allow for storage of socks, toiletries, and even underwear. These types of bed frames are particularly useful in children's bedrooms because not only can clothing items be stored away but so can toys and even items for school.

Homeowners undertaking this type of project should be wary however as rushing out to purchase these types of items for a bedroom can result in money and time wasted. The help of a professional organizer and/or interior designer is always going to be recommended so that a homeowner ends up with results that they can be excited about. Unless a homeowner is vastly experienced in professional organization, it's likely that they will lack the skills necessary to maximize space and purchase improper bedroom furniture. The good news is that most interior designers and/organizers aren't all that expensive especially when it comes to smaller projects like this.

Exterior Paint Job: More Than Just Looking Good

While exterior paint jobs on a home are normally done in order to improve the look of a home, there are other reasons to have a home's exterior repainted. While the paint job will initially make a home attractive to both visitors and potential buyers, painting the exterior of a home also helps to protect a home as well. While many neighbors will be seen painting the exteriors of their homes once a single homeowner has done it, they do so only because they want to keep up with “the Jones'”.

While neighbors will paint their home in order to add personality to their home, just like the first person on their block on their cul-de-sac, many homeowners know that painting the exterior of their home bring more than just and bragging rights. High-grade paint on a home protects a home from things like rainfall, snowfall, extreme heat, and unrelenting sunlight. In fact many modern exterior paints come complete with protective coatings mixed in which makes it even easier for a homeowner to justify the cost of repainting their home's exterior. These paints reduce damage from all of the aforementioned things and even allow homeowner to go longer between exterior paint jobs.

Now some homeowners may have some trepidation regarding having the exterior of their home repainted but homeowners should first contact a professional painter to determine whether or not their existing paint job is holding up and capable of protecting their home. As most homes don't receive exterior repainting for years or decades at a time, many homes can still be found with paints that don't take advantage of modern technologies. While they still may look good and may be in good shape it won't be long before those old paints begin to fail both by chipping and peeling and by failing to protect a home from natural elements.

Modern technology has allowed people to craft a wide variety of different types of house paints all of which carry their pros and cons making it difficult for homeowners to discern which one will be right for their home. Once a homeowner decides to move forward with a new exterior paint job for their it really is a good idea to stop and begin looking for a professional house painter. Not only will a professional house painter leave a homeowner with results that laypersons cannot achieve but they can help homeowners select paints that will be best for their home as well.

If the aesthetics of a new exterior paint job don't give a homeowner enough reason to justify the financial investment in such a project, the protection benefits should be more than enough to help them move forward with the project. Even if a homeowner isn't considering selling their home or has no long-term plans to, both they and their home will benefit greatly from the decision to paint their homes exterior which more than justifies any costs associated with such a project.

Quality Custom Shutters

If you’re considering purchasing shutters for your windows, you might consider investing your time and energy to find out the difference between 100% solid wood shutters compared to poly or vinyl. Many simply call the vinyl plastic, and that in itself turns many people away.

One hundred percent wood doesn’t always mean the same thing either. Solid wood does not include particleboard that consists of composites that are manufactured from wood shavings and then pressed together. If that doesn’t bother you, look up the process online.

Quality custom shutters, made from solid 100% wood, are not manufactured, and not glued together to create the look of 100% wood. However they will not stand up to the scrutiny of customers who demand high quality 100% wood.

Now that you know the wood to look for, check out the paint on the shutters. The top quality shutter will have 3 coats of base coat and 2 coats of topcoat. Many companies paint their shutters with the louvers closed together. When that happens, the paint is not even and moisture can penetrate the shutters. The correct way to paint the louvers is to paint them before they assemble them. Otherwise the paint does not seal totally so check the edges of the louvers. Staining should be done in similar ways.

The length of the staples used in construction should be 5/8” to 3/4” and when a company cuts corners on the staples, you end up with a product that will not last. Another way to cut corners is by using dowels instead of cutting a solid piece of wood and fit it together like a puzzle. The dowels are easier and faster to install, but will not stand up to the test of time.

Using catches is cheaper than using magnets that are normally recessed into the wood and placed on the backside of the shutter. You should check out the hinge. A quality hinge will not be a butterfly hinge that is cheaper and easier to install. Full panel hinges will be stronger and hold up much longer.
We could go into the making of the vinyl, or plastic shutters, but because of space, we’ll just mention the things that the salespeople claim make them better than wood. They say price is the biggest concern, and many would agree that their customers don’t demand quality, but are interested only in the price factor.

They also claim that the vinyl will not yellow, crack, and never need painting. Some of that may be true, but certainly not all. Some of the vinyl shutters are reinforced with aluminum, and that would make them stronger, but not all manufacturers use it.

So your best bet is to learn the facts before you decide. Check out the materials on both the 100% wood (not composites), and the vinyl. Another great modifier is to find out how long the company has been in business. You certainly don’t want a fly by night operator, but you do need to do your own homework.

Healthy Air Conditioning And Heating Units

Air-conditioning and heating units are usually expensive as is the maintenance required to keep them working properly and to replace parts when needed. For this reason you might think that homeowners go out of their way to make sure that their heating and cooling units are running optimally and aren't in need of repair or any other type of attention.

Unfortunately reality has shown plenty of contractors and homeowners tend to forget that their heating and cooling units are even there until they stop working completely. Many homeowners do not understand that not only is it expensive and a real inconvenience to be in need of heating/cooling repair, especially when the weather is bad, but there are some health issues that should remain in the forefront of their minds as well.

When their heating/cooling unit is on the fritz or completely down there isn't much homeowner has to worry about other than having it fixed. When they are "functioning" however, homeowners should be concerned with allergens, bacteria's, and even viruses making their way through their homes via air vents. This is especially true of homeowners who have families. Staving off colds and flu's is hard enough for children in the home but when an AC/heating unit hasn't had its filters changed in quite some time the aforementioned forms of micro life inevitably find their way into and around a home.

Even if a person isn't concerned with the health aspects of unclean air filters and the other problems that partially working unit brings to the table, they should still keep in mind that it's a good idea to have a professional air and heating specialist take a look at their unit at least once a year on the minimum. An air-conditioning/heating unit that just barely works or works with problems will not only fail to deliver ample heat and cool air to a home but will they will also cost the homeowner more money to run them as they'll need to be run constantly just to be minimally effective.

As with most other appliances in the home, addressing small issues when they are noticed negates the need to spend more money later on larger more pressing issues. Now that the weather is cooling and most homeowners are beginning to think about switching the AC off and turning the heat on, it's a great time to have a professional out for inspection.

Shower Surrounds: Cleaner And Luxurious

Many homeowners enjoy a good shower after work, just before bed, and even just after waking up. In order to enjoy showers regularly however individuals must be kept theirs clean which takes quite a bit of work. Things like hard water stains and even grout tend to make showers dull, cold, and not as relaxing as they should be. Given the fact that most homeowners spend a great deal of their day working, keeping their shower as clean as they'd like to have it is often seen as an impossible task.

There's good news for homeowners in this situation however is that shower surrounds are fast replacing the traditional tile and grout showers found in most homes today. Shower surrounds offer homeowners a continuous smooth surface that is easily wiped down and kept clean with just a small fraction of the effort required to keep more traditional shower clean and free of grout. The shiny and polished finishes found in shower surrounds give homeowners a much more aesthetically pleasing shower as well.

Now any homeowner who might be considering putting in a new showers surround in their bathroom should remember that shower surrounds are often made of synthetic materials. This shouldn't be of much concern however as all shower surrounds, even the more inexpensive ones, are usually very durable. Additionally shower surrounds come in a wide variety of different prices as well. Models range from very affordable to the extremely luxurious. The more affordable and mid-level models can usually be purchased from a local home improvement store but homeowners with a taste for high living will need to contact a professional to have their more upscale shower surround constructed and installed.

When it comes to installation of shower surrounds homeowners can certainly try to tackle the job themselves as it's not a lengthy process, though the majority of homeowners will benefit greatly from a professional installation. Any time there's plumbing involved homeowners should always, at the very least, consult with a professional contractor in order to make sure they're proceeding with the project safely and efficiently.
