Feng Shui: Redecorating Done Right

When a homeowner sets out to redecorate the interior of their home there a number of things to consider. Things like new paint, new flooring, wall paper, counter tops, and even furniture are all usually at the forefront of a homeowners mind. There is one thing however that many homeowners often overlook and that one thing is Feng Shui.

Feng Shui is essentially the art of arranging and positioning furniture and other objects in a home into proper positions so that the energy flow within a home promotes better health, energy, and living. Feng shui originated in ancient China and is based on the belief that energy flows through a home based on its unique characteristics.

Hiring a professional Feng Shui expert, a homeowner can ensure that not only will he/she feel good in their home but their new furniture and decor will look fantastic as well. Once hired, an expert will begin examining a home's interior and the interactions between people and the actual building. They will consider many things including time related factors and then will determine how best to set up new furniture and fixtures within any specific room. Feng Shui experts will also show homeowners the relationship between the interior and the exterior of their home and how it relates to their outlook on life and well-being. Once a firm assessment has been made Feng Shui experts will ensure that new furniture and even other types of decor are placed properly within a home.

While most Feng Shui experts are affordable, homeowners redecorating but operating on very strict and modest budgets may need to do some things themselves. Many experts will advise do-it-yourselfer's to arrange furniture so that it faces a door and will also recommend that seating areas be set up away from areas within a home that receive drafts. Do-it-yourselfer's will also want to work hard to keep clutter out of the areas which are meant for relaxation. In addition to these things some do-it-yourselfer's may wish to hang up a mirror at the end of their hallway so that the hallway doesn't seem like a dead-end and may wish to place one behind the stove as well to avoid surprises when someone approaches them from behind.

Individuals work hard to purchase and care for their homes. When the time comes for redecorating remodeling they will undoubtedly want to ensure that the improvements they make in their home bring them more pleasure and relaxation than did their previous set up. If a homeowner intends on remodeling the interior of their home and adding new furniture why not take the project all the way and hire a Feng Shui expert?

The Country Decor Umbrella

When the homeowner decides that the interior of their home needs to undergo a transformation there are a number of different styles to choose from. Homeowners can opt for neo-modern decor, contemporary decor, and even retro decor. In addition to these styles homeowners can also select from country decor. When remodeling the interior of a home country decor is often selected because of the moods and atmospheres it helps to create within a home. In many cases homeowners select a country theme simply because it gives their home a relaxing and homey feel.

Many homeowners are surprised to find that when they select a country theme for their soon to be remodeled interior that there are a number of options under the country umbrella. The first on the list and perhaps most popular is the rustic country look. Rustic home decor is mainly dominated by wood and stone installations. Moreover the rustic country look is much more down-to-earth than the other types under the umbrella. Color schemes are often very subtle yet colorful and rustic country furniture can really make a home look and feel as though it's a cabin in the mountains.

Homeowners who like that country look and feel but don't want to give up on contemporary features can select contemporary country decor for their home. While this might initially sounds like a clash of styles the two styles mesh well and are strengthened by creative lighting. Overhead lighting fixtures and lamps are often used in conjunction with decorative wood backings on walls.

Additionally wrought-iron may be used by some decorators and by some homeowners in order to accent and offset the wood in their new interior. Contemporary country decor gives homeowners the best of both worlds.

Homeowners who want something a bit different when selecting country decor for their new interior often opt for primitive country decor. This type of decor emphasizes the worn look of country decorating and incorporates intentionally distressed materials. Utilizing these things often gives homes a sort of timeless quality and an exotic look. Primitive country decor often costs much more than the two aforementioned types however should a homeowner be able to afford this type of decor, their home will benefit from it greatly.

Cleaning Window Tracks

He is in the minds of many a layperson, window cleaning is simply wetting, soaping up, rinsing, and then the drying of windows. Of course expressing this assessment to a professional is likely to yield laughter and even a raised eyebrow. The reaction professionals express is often brought about as a result of their extensive knowledge. Any professional will tell you cleaning windows involves much more than the aforementioned steps.

The most commonly overlooked aspect of window cleaning within a home by laypersons is window tracks. When individuals clean their own windows they will usually ignore it their window tracks. Professionals on the other hand recognize the importance of cleaning window tracks. When left unattended for long periods of time, window tracks can become riddled with not only dirt but things like dead insects, small rocks that they make opening and closing a window difficult, and in some cases mold as well.

After cleaning and drying windows professional window cleaners will utilize different tools and materials in order clean window tracks. It's not uncommon to witness professionals utilizing things like a minivac, an old tooth or wire brush, cleaning rags, and specialized cleaning chemicals. Used in conjunction with one another, these things can keep window tracks looking just as clean and just as new as professionally cleaned windows.

Window tracks that are kept clean not only add to the aesthetic beauty of professionally cleaned windows but make windows easier to open and reduce the danger of trying to open windows that get stuck in their tracks.

New Wood Shelves: Care, Installation, And Maintenance

Adding wood shelves to any room within a home can make space within a room, help individuals stay organized, showcase important belongings, and even add beauty and elegance to a room. Wood shelving carries with them so many benefits it's not difficult to understand why so many homeowners add these type of shelves to their home.

What many individuals often overlook however is the fact that wooden shelves, like any other item made from wood, will require constant care and upkeep. Wooden shelves that are left to the elements and neglected for long periods of time will not only become dirty but face a myriad of problems as well. Neglected wood shelves can rot, warp, peel, chip, and even break when they're not cared for properly and on a fairly consistent basis.

While many homeowners may not realize it, moisture can be detrimental to their wooden shelves. Wooden shelves exposed to high levels of moisture or even low levels of moisture for long periods of time can cause shelves to bow, crack, and rot away. In order to ensure that exposure to moisture is minimized, homeowners who want new shelves installed need to ensure that they are installed away from vents, constantly opened windows, bathrooms, and sometimes kitchens as well.

In sharp contrast to moisture, though just as problematic, is heat. Too much heat is always a problem for shelves made of wood. New wooden shelves should never be installed near radiators, modern heaters, or in areas that receive direct sunlight, nor near fireplaces. Wooden shelves that are exposed to a great deal of heat face the same problems as those exposed to constant moisture.

In addition to heat and moisture homeowners must also remember that once wooden shelves are installed they must be cleaned regularly with a slightly damp cloth and then dried immediately. It also behooves homeowners to place heavier objects on the sides of their wooden shelves rather than the middle in order to avoid bowing and cracking.

Homeowners who want to shelter their home but are apprehensive about selecting wood as their material of choice can always opt for some of the more expensive wood shelves out there. These types of shelves not only boast some fantastic designs, colors, and breeds of wood but are usually treated with protective chemicals and finishes as well. These types of shelves installed and cared for properly will last a homeowner years and even decades.

Cleaning Windows With Purified Water

There are a lot of different methods, chemicals, and tools that people can utilize to clean their windows. Everything from the right squeegee, soft cloth, cleaning solution, and even stroke can make or break the end result of a window cleaning project. What many individuals often overlook when the time comes to clean their windows is the quality of the water they'll be using.

Different types of water can be found in different neighborhoods and will vary greatly from even home to home. Should a homeowner be savvy enough to know which tools and chemicals to utilize for a window cleaning they still may not have the type of water needed to produce the end results they are looking for. Hard water for example may look fine as it is leaving the hose and running down the window but hard water contains high levels of calcium which can promote streaks and spots on even recently cleaned windows. It also causes buildup over time.

In sharp contrast to hard water and other types of less than desirable water, pure water is the most sought-after type of water in professional window cleaning circles. This is because pure water has all its impurities removed long before it ever reaches the hands of professional cleaners and removes soap and debris from windows far better than tapwater.

Most professional cleaners will have a solid understanding and extensive knowledge of how osmosis is used to purified water and how and why purified water cleans windows far more effectively than any other type of liquid. In a nutshell reverse osmosis removes things I calcium, magnesium, sodium, and even iron from water softening it dramatically and removing things that can scratch, damage, and make windows difficult to clean.

Do-it-yourselfers rarely, if ever, give much thought to the water they are using during a window cleaning project. Furthermore it can be difficult for do-it-yourselfers to obtain purified water especially in any meaningful quantity. Professionals on the other hand generally have access to this type of water and even when they don't can adjust their cleaning techniques accordingly.

What Are These Yellow Dots On My windows?

There are a great many things that can cause a window to lose its luster and its clarity. Among them, though rarely spoken of, are little yellow spots. Californians often notice these golden dots all over their cars and homes windows. During certain times of the year these dots will appear in greater numbers making windows look ugly and unkempt. Left untreated these dots can also impede visibility. Not only are they aesthetically displeasing but they are often difficult to remove from windows as well. Despite their commonality and the difficulty people have in removing them, most individuals have no idea what they are or where they come from.

Many individuals believe that they are a substance that falls with morning dew or one that is brought in by rain and other various types of precipitation. What many are surprised to learn however is that these yellow/gold dots found on car and home windows are actually bee excrement. You read right, these yellow and gold dots are the remnants of the pollen that bees consume.

Owners of vehicles can simply move or park their vehicles in a different location, one that's further away from bees but homeowners don't have the luxury of moving their abode to a different location. Although bee droppings are notoriously difficult to clean they don't actually pose any long-term risk to a home's windows and can therefore be cleaned both by homeowners and professional window cleaners. Hiring a professional window cleaner to remove be droppings from a home's windows will always yield greater results and may also see some protective coatings added just after cleaning which make removing future droppings easier. Do-it-yourselfers can also remove be droppings but it will require time, money, and patientce.

Professional window cleaners will have greater success with windows covered in be droppings simply because they have the tools and chemicals necessary to remove just about anything from windows and the experienced hands needed to avoid damaging windows in the process. Things like pressure washers and different chemical soaps can be used both separately and in conjunction with one another remove the little gifts bees leave behind on a homes window. Do-it-yourselfers will quickly find that they will need to invest in expensive tools and chemicals should they wish to remove be droppings from their windows frequently.

Retractable Awnings

As you observe your windows, have you ever wished for a way to cover the windows, but still have them open to the outside? Retractable awnings can do just that. They come in many different styles, colors and sizes and what’s more, you can use them manually, have them motorized or even controlled by remote control. The new retractable awnings also come with rain and wind sensors.

They detect the weather outside and automatically roll up, and you don’t even have to be home.
Other advantages to the retractable awnings, they keep their color and don’t fade. They keep the inside of your house cooler because the awnings keep the sun out, and off your windows. Your interior carpet and furniture don’t fade and neither does your outside furniture.
The best part is the retractable awnings can be open wide, or folded tight against your home. The color blends or contrasts your home color scheme, and the curb appeal provided will increase the value of your home, and it will be the prize of the neighborhood.

Where would you install them? Anywhere the sun shines in. The awnings sit on the outside of your windows and when opened, they shield the sun and shade the entire window. They will be custom made to fit your windows exactly. No guesswork here. When you want your patio entirely covered with a retractable awning, no problem. They work the same way as your window awnings, except larger.

Just a few of the advantages of the patio awning is that it opens up an entire room. You can still barbecue, or sit and read a book, or take a nap and the sun won’t burn or keep everything so hot you can’t touch it. It will be so much more comfortable on your patio; you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it. The cement under it will stay cool as well.

Like we said before, the material does not fade and is water-resistant and durable enough to fight against the elements. They shield you against harmful UV rays and light rain showers, and you’ll still enjoy being outside in the shade on a hot summer day.

With the adjustable awnings you now have a choice. A choice to have them open wide or retracted and protected against your home. For a reliable reputable company, go online and make that phone call. That will be the first step you make to help your home more comfortable as the weather changes daily.

Wood Paneling: Improving Homes With Beauty And Atmosphere

An overwhelming majority of home improvement projects tend to focus on improvements that are immediately and easily recognized by visitors, homeowners, and potential buyers. Heavy focus on improving the aesthetics of the home for any reason tend to cause homeowners to overlook some of the smaller things that can be improved  upon within their home.

One such thing that often goes overlooked is wood paneling. Wood paneling can enhance the beauty of just about any home or room and in most cases is a relatively affordable project when compared to some of the larger home improvement projects out there. Furthermore many homeowners often think of what paneling as just another average quality building material. What many homeowners fail to realize is that high-end wood paneling is both affordable and there are a number of options available to them, all of which can spruce up a room and give it some much-needed atmosphere. Homeowners can choose from beautifully crafted accented wood to knotty pine wood paneling and even wood panels that feature grooves. Regardless of the type a homeowner selects for their home however they're going to end up with extraordinary results.

Homeowners who selects raised wood panels for their project usually do so in order to either create a new or convert an existing room into a den or study. Raised wood panels became popular in the late 1700's and to this day still bring a touch of class to any room in which they are installed. Raised wood panels often feature high-quality workmanship, unique designs, and are usually installed on the bottom third of a wall. Moreover raise wood panels are available in many different types of wood.
Paneling made of knotty pine resembles wood found in log cabins and homes that feature a Western motif. It features plenty of knots and strong grain which gives any home with these types of wood panels in them an old world and/or outback type of atmosphere. Any homeowner with a taste for the mountains, woods, or camping will benefit most from selecting knotty pine wood panels.

Homeowners who want extremely resilient wood panels for their home can selects Cypress panels. Cyprus is extremely resistant to rot, decomposition, as well as insects/bugs. Cypress wood is also extremely beautiful and when added to a room it will provide it with plenty of warmth. While the cost of cypress wood paneling is a little more expensive than most of the other types available, homeowners will get peace of mind knowing that they have one of the most durable types of wood in their home making their money well spent.

No matter what type of wood a homeowner selects for the new wood panels and no matter which rooms within their homes they want to upgrade with paneling it is advisable to contact a professional contractor before making any decisions regarding a purchase or installation. A professional contractor, be it an interior designer or general contractor, will be able to provide a homeowner with insight into the project and help them make the right purchases and even offer tips with installation. Of course hiring a contractor outright to handle the entire project is always an option for homeowners as well.

Efficient Modern Entertainment Centers

Modern entertainment centers can be things of great complexity and expense. Any homeowner who has had a new one set up knows just how much time and money need to be invested in such a project. What many homeowners don't realize however is that there are some small details within these types of projects that often go overlooked but when addressed but these can make the the end result of such projects much more pleasing and more efficient.

Homeowners with large families and stuffed living rooms know just how precious their space can be. Adding a new entertainment center to their living room, while exciting, can also invoke feelings of apprehension as well simply because of the amount of space modern entertainment centers tend to take up. While the excitement of a new entertainment center and the many things that come with it often cause homeowners to rush out, purchase, and install their new entertainment centers, homeowners can save living room space and protect their new television set and their speakers by purchasing wall mounts for them.

This small and overlooked detail can save homeowners time, money, and hassle right out of the gate. Homeowners with families, especially those with small children, know just how much those kids love touching television sets and speakers. Placing them up on walls and out of the reach of children and pets for that matter can keep them from harm and from needing to be replaced or repaired. Placing these and other parts of their modern entertainment center up on a living room wall can also enhance the viewing and audio experience for anyone watching/listening.

Any homeowner considering wall mounting their new television set, speakers, stereo/surround receiver, and even game consoles should never attempt to do so themselves. Not only can the job be dangerous as it involves power tools and heavy lifting but professionals can take precise and accurate measurements so that everything in a new entertainment center functions at optimal levels and provides the maximum amount of entertainment to homeowners and their families as possible.

Cleaning Projects Made Easier: Renting A Dumpster

Not every home improvement project involves the rebuilding of a room, the purchase of new furniture, or new paint. Sometimes the greatest thing anyone can do for their home is to clean it thoroughly. For some homeowners this means cleaning out closets, attics, and their garage. For others it means cleaning up their front and back yards and for others it's all of the above and then some.

Homeowners who undertake large cleaning projects often employ the services of a maid or a housekeeper to assist in not only the initial cleaning but in maintaining the home after the initial project has been completed. What many homeowners don't talk about however is that regardless of who they hire they're going to need somewhere to store their refuse. For some utilizing outdoor garbage cans is enough while others will simply purchase additional trash cans for use during the project. What many homeowners often overlooked however is that dumpsters can be rented, most of the time at fairly affordable rates, and that these can make a large cleaning project a little less stressful and tedious.

Having one large dumpster on the grounds of a home allows homeowners and any professionals they hire move garbage and discarded items to one large bin instead of separate bags and bins. It also negates the need for homeowners to fill the trash bins that are assigned to their home and picked up only once a week. Furthermore renting a dumpster or two for very big projects allows homeowners to avoid having to make multiple trips to their local dump which adds additional costs to their project.

Having a dumpster at their home during a thorough cleaning project is something many professional organizers and cleaners often recommend as it makes their job easier as well. Homeowners interested in renting a dumpster can contact their local water/trash municipal and ask for prices. There are also independent companies available that rent dumpsters and offer specialized pickup and delivery services as well which gives homeowners with cleaning projects even more options and can help make their project that much easier.

Concrete Staining: Breathe New Life Into A Homes Concrete

For homeowners the word staining usually conjures up thoughts of expensive wood flooring. While homeowners may always think of wood flooring when they think of staining there is something else in and around their home they can have stained. The concrete in basements, street side garages, and even backyard decks and patios can be stained in order to spice up their looks and in some cases protect them for years and decades at a time.

Most homeowners are unaware of it but acid stained concrete is often found in restaurants, hotels, grocery and home improvement stores, and even hospitals. Acid staining concrete in a home is often done by homeowners who want their concrete not only protected but to look unique amongst the other houses in their neighborhood. Acid staining is often used to create mottled looks and concrete with solid coloring. Additionally stained concrete can be lightly smoothed out or incorporate a very heavily brushed look. Homeowners who really want something different however can have their contractor create concrete that's swirled and scored or even darkened or lightened so as to enhance the atmosphere of a particular room.

While many homeowners love the look of marble, they don't necessarily love the price. Stained concrete however gives homeowners the opportunity to have something in their home that looks almost indistinguishable from marble flooring and/or furniture. Homeowners can also elect to have their homes concrete stained in order to erase years of wear and tear that comes from leaking vehicles, heavy foot traffic, pets, and even garage construction. No matter how discolored concrete may have become around a home a professional contractor can give a homeowner concrete that matches the color of stains and its wear and tear.

Despite there being some very big benefits to concrete staining, homeowners should discuss with their contractor some potential drawbacks. The first and most important being the difficulty and sometimes impossibility of changing the coloring of concrete staining once it's been set. This means that homeowners must carefully choose their color and design before moving forward because once such a project is finished there is little to no going back. Homeowners must also prepare for concrete staining by moving furniture in any other important items faraway from the area where their contractor will be working.

Desert Landscaping

If you live in an area where desert landscaping is a necessity, you may only see large lawns at the golf course. Cities and counties that discourage those lawns and some will even pay you to remove them when the sole purpose is to conserve water.

Water is a valuable asset and a green lawn is not even a necessity. If you live in an area that is experiencing a drought it will be worth your effort to contact a landscape professional. They know the area, and know which plants are indigenous and you will easily be able to maintain them in a natural environment.

There are many ways to conserve and many ways where your plants will thrive in sandy soil. When you add heat and wind to that mix the need increases for you to find the correct balance between nature and your water bill.

Hedges and natural plants like cactus and yucca will be an added benefit because they do not need a great deal of water, and many flowering plants like lilies and poppies fall in that category as well. Often you can plant the flowers in planters where the water is absorbed directly onto the roots with no waste.

Another way to beat the heat and water consumption is to have the landscape professional install timed irrigation drip systems. They only water at precise times, like early morning or evenings and you have no runoff and no evaporation in the heat of the day.

Stone pathways surrounded with those indigenous plants create beautiful yards with perennials like oleander, bougainvillea and even juniper. Install small window planters inside or out that conserve as well and you still have the benefit of beautiful living flowers in your dry waterless space.

A few basic options you need to follow in order to sustain the long summer months will be to water in the early morning or late afternoon after the sun has retreated. Try to check to see if your plants even need water by checking the soil. Some plants only need watering weekly especially in the fall and winter months. Others go dormant in those months and need no water.

If you have a great deal of concrete for walkways or driveways, remember those areas reflect the heat instead of absorbing it. It’s actually hotter in those areas, and may even raise the temperature around your home. A little common sense goes a long way and when you hire a professional landscaper you’ll be dollars ahead.

Custom Window Shutters

Customized window shutters have changed as much as our country has changed throughout the years. Originally they installed the plantation shutters over open windows (without glass) and they opened completely or closed completely as well. They provided security and privacy, but afforded a way for the inhabitants of the home to control the weather.

They installed the original shutters on the outside of their homes. You can still do that of course, but many custom window shutters have made their way into the interior of the home. You’ll see those custom shutters throughout the home and sometimes they even close off one room from another by installing shutters across the doorways.

The shutters are that strong, or rather they should be. When you decide on 100% real wood custom window shutters, you’ll be amazed at their strength. When the company you choose to construct and install the custom shutters, they will tell you what works best in your home.

Without doubt, custom window shutters are way beyond simplicity. They have a beauty all their own and can be installed with other window treatments and still have the uniqueness that only they can give. From heavy draperies to sheer curtains your rooms will emerge from their drab existence to an elegant setting where your pride will shine through. Even when you let them stand alone, they bring the final touches to your room and are very pleasing to any observer.

The custom shutters still provide security and privacy and even if you live where four seasons don’t exist, they control the heat escaping or entering your residence or work place. They mount those wide louvers into a solid wooden frame, and the louvers on the shutters are between two and three inches wide. There is hardly any resemblance to those old-fashioned venetian blinds.

The air can flow freely with the shutters open wide, or when you place the louvers in the open position. They open in any position between open and close and can provide that privacy simply by making adjustments in the louvers.

The variety of styles and window treatment will astonish you. No matter the size or function of your windows, the custom window shutters will fill that window entirely. The strength, beauty and amount of options will convince you that you have made the right decision.

Whether you want one window, a room full or your entire home covered with quality customized window shutters, their superiority over the competitors will ease your mind and you’ll realize that you made the correct decision.

Organizing A Bedroom With New Furniture

Selecting new bedroom furniture can be an exciting project. That said there are two primary reasons for adding new furniture to a bedroom; both of which require careful consideration on the part of a homeowner. The first reason homeowners might add some new furniture to a bedroom is to liven up a bedroom and to give it some much needed atmosphere. The second and sometimes more important reason for adding new furniture to a bedroom is organization and maximizing space.

Although many homeowners may not admit or even talk about it, adding new furniture to a bedroom can really maximize space in even the smallest of bedrooms and can help them with storage issues as well. In many cases homeowners will have options available to them which will allow them to purchase good-looking furniture that doubles as storage pieces. Of course with so many different types of bedroom furniture available these days a homeowner can quickly become befuddled and find themselves unsure of which items to purchase. Homeowners serious about new bedroom furniture and maximizing space and storage should consult with an interior decorator and/or professional organizer in order to find out what their best options are.

As bedrooms can quickly become overcrowded with furniture, clothing, television sets, and dressers, it's not hard to imagine what why some homeowners go the route of new bedroom furniture when they're looking to increase living space in their bedrooms and make them more comfortable. While the majority of homeowners will have a large dresser in their bedroom in order to accommodate their clothing, many fail to recognize that a dresser can be replaced by a modern bedroom entertainment center. While it may seem odd at first, many modern bedroom entertainment centers are built to double as a dresser allowing homeowners to combine a dresser and an entertainment center in one body which ultimately frees up space in their bedroom. The same can be said of bed frames as well.

Modern bed frames are often built to include things like drawers, both large and small, that allow for storage of socks, toiletries, and even underwear. These types of bed frames are particularly useful in children's bedrooms because not only can clothing items be stored away but so can toys and even items for school.

Homeowners undertaking this type of project should be wary however as rushing out to purchase these types of items for a bedroom can result in money and time wasted. The help of a professional organizer and/or interior designer is always going to be recommended so that a homeowner ends up with results that they can be excited about. Unless a homeowner is vastly experienced in professional organization, it's likely that they will lack the skills necessary to maximize space and purchase improper bedroom furniture. The good news is that most interior designers and/organizers aren't all that expensive especially when it comes to smaller projects like this.

Exterior Paint Job: More Than Just Looking Good

While exterior paint jobs on a home are normally done in order to improve the look of a home, there are other reasons to have a home's exterior repainted. While the paint job will initially make a home attractive to both visitors and potential buyers, painting the exterior of a home also helps to protect a home as well. While many neighbors will be seen painting the exteriors of their homes once a single homeowner has done it, they do so only because they want to keep up with “the Jones'”.

While neighbors will paint their home in order to add personality to their home, just like the first person on their block on their cul-de-sac, many homeowners know that painting the exterior of their home bring more than just and bragging rights. High-grade paint on a home protects a home from things like rainfall, snowfall, extreme heat, and unrelenting sunlight. In fact many modern exterior paints come complete with protective coatings mixed in which makes it even easier for a homeowner to justify the cost of repainting their home's exterior. These paints reduce damage from all of the aforementioned things and even allow homeowner to go longer between exterior paint jobs.

Now some homeowners may have some trepidation regarding having the exterior of their home repainted but homeowners should first contact a professional painter to determine whether or not their existing paint job is holding up and capable of protecting their home. As most homes don't receive exterior repainting for years or decades at a time, many homes can still be found with paints that don't take advantage of modern technologies. While they still may look good and may be in good shape it won't be long before those old paints begin to fail both by chipping and peeling and by failing to protect a home from natural elements.

Modern technology has allowed people to craft a wide variety of different types of house paints all of which carry their pros and cons making it difficult for homeowners to discern which one will be right for their home. Once a homeowner decides to move forward with a new exterior paint job for their it really is a good idea to stop and begin looking for a professional house painter. Not only will a professional house painter leave a homeowner with results that laypersons cannot achieve but they can help homeowners select paints that will be best for their home as well.

If the aesthetics of a new exterior paint job don't give a homeowner enough reason to justify the financial investment in such a project, the protection benefits should be more than enough to help them move forward with the project. Even if a homeowner isn't considering selling their home or has no long-term plans to, both they and their home will benefit greatly from the decision to paint their homes exterior which more than justifies any costs associated with such a project.

Quality Custom Shutters

If you’re considering purchasing shutters for your windows, you might consider investing your time and energy to find out the difference between 100% solid wood shutters compared to poly or vinyl. Many simply call the vinyl plastic, and that in itself turns many people away.

One hundred percent wood doesn’t always mean the same thing either. Solid wood does not include particleboard that consists of composites that are manufactured from wood shavings and then pressed together. If that doesn’t bother you, look up the process online.

Quality custom shutters, made from solid 100% wood, are not manufactured, and not glued together to create the look of 100% wood. However they will not stand up to the scrutiny of customers who demand high quality 100% wood.

Now that you know the wood to look for, check out the paint on the shutters. The top quality shutter will have 3 coats of base coat and 2 coats of topcoat. Many companies paint their shutters with the louvers closed together. When that happens, the paint is not even and moisture can penetrate the shutters. The correct way to paint the louvers is to paint them before they assemble them. Otherwise the paint does not seal totally so check the edges of the louvers. Staining should be done in similar ways.

The length of the staples used in construction should be 5/8” to 3/4” and when a company cuts corners on the staples, you end up with a product that will not last. Another way to cut corners is by using dowels instead of cutting a solid piece of wood and fit it together like a puzzle. The dowels are easier and faster to install, but will not stand up to the test of time.

Using catches is cheaper than using magnets that are normally recessed into the wood and placed on the backside of the shutter. You should check out the hinge. A quality hinge will not be a butterfly hinge that is cheaper and easier to install. Full panel hinges will be stronger and hold up much longer.
We could go into the making of the vinyl, or plastic shutters, but because of space, we’ll just mention the things that the salespeople claim make them better than wood. They say price is the biggest concern, and many would agree that their customers don’t demand quality, but are interested only in the price factor.

They also claim that the vinyl will not yellow, crack, and never need painting. Some of that may be true, but certainly not all. Some of the vinyl shutters are reinforced with aluminum, and that would make them stronger, but not all manufacturers use it.

So your best bet is to learn the facts before you decide. Check out the materials on both the 100% wood (not composites), and the vinyl. Another great modifier is to find out how long the company has been in business. You certainly don’t want a fly by night operator, but you do need to do your own homework.

Healthy Air Conditioning And Heating Units

Air-conditioning and heating units are usually expensive as is the maintenance required to keep them working properly and to replace parts when needed. For this reason you might think that homeowners go out of their way to make sure that their heating and cooling units are running optimally and aren't in need of repair or any other type of attention.

Unfortunately reality has shown plenty of contractors and homeowners tend to forget that their heating and cooling units are even there until they stop working completely. Many homeowners do not understand that not only is it expensive and a real inconvenience to be in need of heating/cooling repair, especially when the weather is bad, but there are some health issues that should remain in the forefront of their minds as well.

When their heating/cooling unit is on the fritz or completely down there isn't much homeowner has to worry about other than having it fixed. When they are "functioning" however, homeowners should be concerned with allergens, bacteria's, and even viruses making their way through their homes via air vents. This is especially true of homeowners who have families. Staving off colds and flu's is hard enough for children in the home but when an AC/heating unit hasn't had its filters changed in quite some time the aforementioned forms of micro life inevitably find their way into and around a home.

Even if a person isn't concerned with the health aspects of unclean air filters and the other problems that partially working unit brings to the table, they should still keep in mind that it's a good idea to have a professional air and heating specialist take a look at their unit at least once a year on the minimum. An air-conditioning/heating unit that just barely works or works with problems will not only fail to deliver ample heat and cool air to a home but will they will also cost the homeowner more money to run them as they'll need to be run constantly just to be minimally effective.

As with most other appliances in the home, addressing small issues when they are noticed negates the need to spend more money later on larger more pressing issues. Now that the weather is cooling and most homeowners are beginning to think about switching the AC off and turning the heat on, it's a great time to have a professional out for inspection.

Shower Surrounds: Cleaner And Luxurious

Many homeowners enjoy a good shower after work, just before bed, and even just after waking up. In order to enjoy showers regularly however individuals must be kept theirs clean which takes quite a bit of work. Things like hard water stains and even grout tend to make showers dull, cold, and not as relaxing as they should be. Given the fact that most homeowners spend a great deal of their day working, keeping their shower as clean as they'd like to have it is often seen as an impossible task.

There's good news for homeowners in this situation however is that shower surrounds are fast replacing the traditional tile and grout showers found in most homes today. Shower surrounds offer homeowners a continuous smooth surface that is easily wiped down and kept clean with just a small fraction of the effort required to keep more traditional shower clean and free of grout. The shiny and polished finishes found in shower surrounds give homeowners a much more aesthetically pleasing shower as well.

Now any homeowner who might be considering putting in a new showers surround in their bathroom should remember that shower surrounds are often made of synthetic materials. This shouldn't be of much concern however as all shower surrounds, even the more inexpensive ones, are usually very durable. Additionally shower surrounds come in a wide variety of different prices as well. Models range from very affordable to the extremely luxurious. The more affordable and mid-level models can usually be purchased from a local home improvement store but homeowners with a taste for high living will need to contact a professional to have their more upscale shower surround constructed and installed.

When it comes to installation of shower surrounds homeowners can certainly try to tackle the job themselves as it's not a lengthy process, though the majority of homeowners will benefit greatly from a professional installation. Any time there's plumbing involved homeowners should always, at the very least, consult with a professional contractor in order to make sure they're proceeding with the project safely and efficiently.
