Irvine Electrician: Major Electrical Upgrades

It used to be that electrical upgrades in a home were quite uncommon. A television set and a few appliances throughout the home were all that required electricity. In modern homes however not only are electoral upgrades far more common than they ever have been but large-scale or powerful electrical upgrades are becoming commonplace as well. This is due to the amount of appliances and even recreational equipment in modern homes, all of which depends heavily on electricity. Modern households often feature three or more television sets, a number of different computers, sound systems, and even complicated modern appliances like smart ranges and refrigerators. Throw in all of the mobile devices that need constant charging and it's not difficult to see why these types of upgrades have become commonplace in modern households.

In newly built homes or homes that have been built within the last 3 to 5 years there is little need for large or powerful electrical upgrades. The vast majority of homeowners however occupy homes that were built one, two, or even three decades ago. In scenarios like this, homeowners have no choice but to go through a major electoral upgrade. Before starting such a project however a homeowner has several things that they must consider carefully.

The first thing that a homeowner must consider is the actual planning of major electoral upgrade project. A homeowner should find and work closely with electrical contractor that can help them determine what their family's electrical needs are and balance that with what they can afford. In 25% to 30% of all homes there will be a need for some sort of electrical service upgrade before new wiring can be installed and working closely with the contractor will help identify that need. A good example of this is a 60 amp electrical wiring in an older home that needs to be replaced with 100 or more amps. Only licensed electricians can do this job and do it properly. Through careful planning and working closely with the contractor during this phase homeowners will be able to accurately ascertain exactly what it is they'll need to do and what type of money they'll need to spend.

Another thing homeowners must consider when planning an electrical upgrade for their homes is their circuit breaker. This is another job that should never really be undertaken by homeowners themselves. An experienced electrical contractor will need to be called in to determine whether or not an existing circuit breaker can handle all of the upgrades a homeowner has in mind and/or needs. A professional contract can help the homeowner determine the difference between a circuit breaker that delivers a 60 amp service and one that delivers 100 amps or more. Those with 60 amps or less will always need to be upgraded but the type of circuit breaker installed may not be immediately determinable by a homeowner. Homeowners also need to determine whether or not their current circuit breaker has any open circuit slots for new wiring and new workloads. This again is another example of something a contractor can and should help a homeowner determine.

Even if a homeowner is extremely savvy with all things electrical they will still need to hire an inspector before any rewiring or upgrading begins. A licensed professional can help homeowners determine what type of shape their electrical system is in as well as find any problems that may be lurking behind walls or inside of outlets. Another benefit of hiring a licensed electrical inspector is that it looks extremely good when the time comes to sell a home. Allowing an unlicensed "under the table" inspector to go through a homes wiring system can make it difficult to sell a home and leave  homeowners and buyers concerns about safety and security a bit shaky.

Once all these things have been settled on upgrading can begin. The time it takes for a professional to complete this type of project will depend largely on what a homeowner is asking for and what the needs of particular household turn out to be. These projects can run a bit longer than expected when an inspector finds problems in an older homes electrical system which in turn can raise the cost of this type of project as well. All in all however major electrical upgrades for homes carries with them far more benefits than they do drawbacks. While some homeowners may have trepidations about spending a large sum of money on this type of project the end result begins paying for itself immediately.
